Whats the attraction for us in terms of a Canary Islands package holiday? Well, the Canary Islands, as we all know, enjoy an amazing climate. This is because of their location just off the coast of Morroco, North Africa. This climate produces near constant temperatures all year round and makes the canaries particularly popular with North Europeans looking for some holiday sunshine without breaking the bank! the Canary islands are made up of Gran Canaria, Fuerteventura, Lanzarote, Tenerife, La Palma, Gomera and Hierro. The islands are not in fact named after the canary songbirds, the name comes from the latin for dogd “Canis” as the first settlers to the islands found them inhabited by fearsome hounds!

All the Canary islands offer clean beaches of fine sand - many man made as the natural sand on most of the islands can be very “dirty” looking due to volcanic ash so sand is imported via the Sahara desert! In addition to the many purpose built seaside resorts on the islands there are many idyllic fishing villages, hilltop hamlets and vast unspoilt areas of natural beauty ( many of which are protected as national parks or wildlife sanctuaries.

Tenerife is the largest of the Canary isles and also the most popular for UK tourists. On first sight this island is very impressive with the scenery dominated by a Volcanic mountain range right in the centre of the island (Gran Canaria also has a mountain range in it’s centre !) This island is big enough to offer plenty of variety with mountains, deserts and even tropical forests!

Fuerteventura is renowned for having the longest and best beaches in the Canary islands. Fuerteventura is just a hundred miles from the African continent, so as you can imagine the weather is particularly hot in the summer! . The capital of Fuerteventura is Puerto Rosario and there are many wonderful beaches close by

Lanzarote has a different look than the other Canary isles with its extraordinary “lunar” landscape. many movies have been shot here including One million years BC, When dinosaurs ruled the earth. Journey to the centre of the earth, Doctor Who and The search for treasure island.

There are hundreds of popular resorts spread throughout the canaries including Agaete Playa Del Duque, Playa Del Ingles, Puerto Calero, Puerto Del Carmen, San Bartolome, Santa Cruz De Tenerife and Playa De Taurito.

A Canary Islands package holiday has been the default choice for many of us in the grey, wet and dreary UK since the 1960’s, just a 4 hour flight from any regional airport and you can be relaxing in the sun even in the middle of winter!
