Getting to grips with a foreign language can be very difficult for anyone, but with the right resources and attitude it is certainly something that is within everyones reach.

The Test of Courage - A recently published report commissioned by the late Michael Thomas found that people who learn a foreign language are richer, happier, have increased perception of intelligence, more social opportunities and are even regarded as sexier than those who can only speak English.

There are many reasons for learning a foreign language, including traveling abroad, business meetings and relations, moving to another country, communicating with foreign family members, or simply the desire to learn. Whatever the reason, there are some places and resources that may be useful during your quest to learn.

First, the most accessible ways of learning a foreign language are books, books on tape, and dictionaries. These can be found in just about any larger bookstore or public library. Books are functional because they are relatively inexpensive, even free if you utilize the local public library. These can also be taken along with you for quick reference if you are learning a foreign language because of travel or business purposes.

Learning a language can be hugely beneficial in employment for two main reasons; firstly it can offer those in established careers the chance to progress , and also it opens doors to new careers and employment opportunities such as Teaching, Translation & Interpreting, Travel, Tourism and Hospitality Industries and of course opportunities within International Organisations.

Another method of learning a foreign language is online courses. Many require a minimal charge, but are convenient because they are used from the comfort of your own home and most do not require completion by a certain date. Online courses and books do have their drawbacks, as you are unable to hear the pronunciations and some people learn better by hearing rather than reading.

Other methods include taking traditional courses through local colleges, community colleges, community and cultural centers. Cultural centers can be quite interesting, as these courses are often taught by someone that the language is spoken daily in their lives with family, and quite often they live in areas immersed with the culture surrounding the language as well. Any of these courses do require motivation and a timetable because they are taught on a schedule and require attendance. However, this may be the better option for some, as it is useful to hear and interact with others using the foreign language in context while learning.

“Foreign language is crucial to our nation’s economic competitiveness and national security. Multilingualism enhances cognitive and social growth, competitiveness in the global marketplace (four out of five new jobs in the United States are created from foreign trade), national security, and understanding of diverse people and cultures. As we approach a new century where global communication will be essential for survival, we cannot afford the luxury of international ignorance…” - The United States Congress

Overall, you will need to evaluate the reason you are looking into learning a foreign language. If you are capable of learning effectively in a more relaxed environment and without hearing the language firsthand, you may benefit from books or online courses. If you would like more intense teaching and would like to be immersed in the language to learn, local classes may be the best option. Of course, you might also use any combination of resources to fit your needs. Whatever method you choose, learning a foreign language is exciting and attainable if you are motivated.
