Costa rica travel info
The main attractions in Costa Rico are kind off split between national parks/wildlife refuges and more conventional “touristy” attractions. Main highlights are:
- The Corcovado National Park— Fancy a hike in the tropical rainforest? Then this park is ideal for both serious hikers and those simply looking for a pleasent afternoon stroll in an authentic rainforest.
- National Park of Palo Verde—an as yet undiscovered jewel in the Costa Rican park system. This area has not yet suffered from the influx of tourists and is relatively unspoilt. The trail system leaves something to be desired, but this certainly means fewer crowds and easier access to natural beauty. There are a number of secluded areas that can be explored by boat.
- Caño Negro wildlife refuge—Nature cruises through these wetlands are quite popular with toutists from many parts of the world now, but don’t worry there are still thousands of acres to explore where you will not see another person all day unless you wish to.
- La Fortuna de Bagaces— This is a sleepy hamlet between the volcanoes Miravalles and Rincón de la Vieja. You can delight in the beautiful swimming holes at the base of spectacular waterfalls, and incredible unspoilt forests, in addition the geysers and mud pots of Las Hornillas are just like Yellowstone with abundant natural hotsprings.
- Barra Honda Caverns—Not everyone is interested in caving or spelunking, but for those who are you will appreciate these caves.
- Santa Rosa National Park— protects and provides a mechanism for restoration of perhaps the only significant tropical dry forest in the world that will survive our generation. The main campsites at the headquarters and on playa naranjo serve as jumping off points for extended explorations.
- Monteverde—Probably the most famous attraction. This reserve provides the easiest access to the amazing cloud forests, and there is a grreat infrastructure of resources set up to help you make the most of your visit here. Despite the popularity and growth in tourism in the surrounding areas, a few hundred yards off the main routes and you’re unlikely to see anyone else on the trail.
- Puerto Viejo de Talamanca— Delightful Caribbean village. Delicious fresh fish and coconut dishes/curries, and locally made fragrant spiced breads. Wildlife abounds in the Cahuita National Park and Gandoca-Manzanillo National Wildlife Refuge on the coast.
